If George W. Bush is the modern Harry Truman, then maybe John McCain is the modern Eisenhower. Eisenhower, after all, was a military hero of a more moderate stripe, whom the Democrats had made overtures towards getting him to run previously. Of course, Ike didn't have Limbaugh, Hannity, Ingraham, and Coulter around to scream about what a disaster he would be back then.
