A very sad movie. The film is a documentary, set in Utah County, chronicling drug abuse, especially amongst teenagers, many of whom think that prescription drug abuse isn't against the Word of Wisdom.

The Director's step-daughter (let me just ruin the surprise ending for all of you who will ever see it, by which I mean all of you) is currently in the Draper Prison serving 6 years. She was the one who, along with her Seminary President boyfriend, gave a girl a needle and cocaine in Provo in 2004 and when she overdosed, they tried to hide the body in the hills up behind Bountiful.

Let me just stop here and say that the Draper Prison has got to have the most interesting criminals in the world. In the Under the Banner of Heaven novel (you didn't read it because someone in your ward sent you a chain email giving it the Big Love treatment) it describes Ron Lafferty, who was an American Fork City Councilman, right wing nut, prominent ward member- you know 3600 just like him. Well, he started reading up on polygamy, said "well, either Joseph and Brigham prophesied a lot of stuff that didn't come true.... and I can;t have that... or else the Church sold out to make Utah a state, which figures because the damn federal government...", and went fundamentalist.

Then, in 1984, on Pioneer Day of all things, in American Fork, he murdered his 15 month old niece and 24 year old sister in law- who everyone knew because a local TV news anchor. He killed them... because God had told his brother that he was to do it, and follow our prophets we must. Anyway, the point is, he is a cell mate of Mark Hoffman!! The Mark Hoffman who lost his testimony on his mission to England, but decided to go study history at Utah State and start get back at the Church and so he forged the Salamander Letter and the Joseph Smith III blessing and other "embarrassing documents" which the Church leaders were buying and trading for behind the scenes, even as Bruce R. McConkie was saying "Bogus, Joseph never woulda said that." Until it all went wrong, and he killed 2 people with pipe bombs in Salt Lake. Yeah, those 2 are cell mates and apparently total best friends here in Draper. ONLY IN UTAH :)

Anyway, back to the movie. It is jut funny to see the drug runner on film talking "I love the Church. I don't blame the Church. Drugs aren't a Utah problem. But denial and pride and unwillingness to seek help are all Utah problems. I know Sr. Clark is doing drugs, she thinks pescription meds aren't drugs, but she is paying me a lot for them, but she is a good Relief Society Leader... and yeah, Br. Jones is a real good customer, I think he wants to confess and get it together before he loses his family like I did, but he ain't gonna go confess- the guy is bucking for a promotion at Church! They all are! This is the You Have to Be Perfect state. We don't have a drug problem, you see!"

But mainly it was sad to have the narc officer show the charts on deaths in Utah from drug overdoses, curvig up out of control, the parents of teenagers who died talking about how they had no clue.
